چکیده

The quartz crystal used in the reference oscillator in a wireless communication transceiver is among the most difficult to integrate on chip. On-chip devices capable of matching its Q (on the order of 10,000) and temperature stability (<35ppm over 0-70C) are generally unavailable. Recently, an on-chip vibrating clamped-clamped beam (CC-beam) micromechanical resonator based on MEMS technology has been demonstrated at 10MHz with a Q of 4,000 and a frequency stability of 34ppm [1] over 070C, which matches that of quartz. Unfortunately, a recently demonstrated 10MHz oscillator using a wide-beam variant of this resonator [2] exhibits a far-from-carrier phase noise of only -120dBc/Hz—a value caused mainly by the insufficient power handling ability of the CC-beam micromechanical resonator device used [3].

Stemless Wine-glass-mode Disk Micromechanical Resonators

Polysilicon wine-glass mode micromechanical disk resonators using a stemless, non-intrusive suspension structure have been demonstrated in both vacuum and atmospheric pressure at frequencies around 73.4 MHz with Q’s as high as 98,000 in vacuum, and 8,600 in atmosphere—the highest ever reported Q’s at this frequency range and in these environments for any on-chip micro-scale resonator. The Q of ...

Phase Noise Amplitude Dependence in Self-limiting Wine-glass Disk Oscillators

Self-limiting 46.4-MHz series resonant reference oscillators employing a wine-glass mode disk micromechanical resonator to avoid hard limiting without the need for ALC have achieved measured phase noises of -113 and -134 dBc/Hz at 1kHz and far-fromcarrier offsets, respectively. When divided down to 10MHz frequency for fair comparison with other oscillators, these values correspond to -126 dBc/H...

The Micromechanical Resonant Switch (“resoswitch”)

A micromechanical switch, dubbed the “resoswitch”, has been demonstrated that harnesses the resonance and nonlinear dynamical properties of its mechanical structure to greatly increase switching speed and cycle count (even under hot switching), and lower the needed actuation voltage, all by substantial factors over existing RF MEMS switches. The device comprises a wine-glass mode disk resonator...

Design of Spring Coupling for High- Q High-Frequency MEMS Filters for Wireless Applications

This paper presents the design optimization of the coupling beam of wine glass (WG) mode micromechanical disk filters using the simulated annealing algorithm. The filter under consideration consists of two identical wine-glass mode disk resonators, mechanically coupled by a flexural mode beam. Such coupled two-resonator system exhibits two mechanical resonance modes with closely spaced frequenc...

Does Glass Size and Shape Influence Judgements of the Volume of Wine?

BACKGROUND Judgements of volume may influence the rate of consumption of alcohol and, in turn, the amount consumed. The aim of the current study was to examine the impact of the size and shape of wine glasses on perceptions of wine volume. METHODS Online experiment: Participants (n = 360; recruited via Mechanical Turk) were asked to match the volume of wine in two wine glasses, specifically: ...
